Design collaboration with Valentia Slate, Valentia Island, Co. Kerry
Valentia Slate were looking to create a product range that would be distinctive and based on a strong design ethos.
Along with the development of some distinctive pieces that would highlight the beauty and qualities of this unique material, they were keen to integrate a strong design philosophy that would be integral to all products produced by the quarry.
Focusing on the material qualities, manufacturing processes, and aesthetics of the slate, they wanted to ensure that the design aesthetic of the quarry is high quality, coherent, and consistent.
Flat-pack stone furniture
The initial brief certainly sparked interest: a garden chair that would be sold flat-pack, easy to assemble, and without deteriorating fixings.
The design process involved initial scaled models in card, followed by full-size plywood prototypes to figure out the components and how these would interact and form a structure. Testing using the slate itself was completed to explore and test the boundaries in terms of thickness and functionality.
