Wood

Wood is a natural material where the grain and colour varies and it will naturally age over time. The quality and beauty of wood means the aging process can add character compared to synthetic materials. It is still important to look after wood and to take care not to mistreat furniture and wooden products.

General Care

Wood will expand and contract with seasonal humidity changes, which may in some cases result in warping or cracks. Try to maintain consistent humidity levels and avoid dramatic changes in temperature. Never place furniture close to wood-burning stoves or radiators.

Air and sunlight will change the color of wood over time. Avoid direct sunlight as far as possible. Occasionally reposition items placed on your furniture to maintain a consistent color change throughout its surface.

Your wood furniture can be damaged by moisture and heat. We recommend always protecting your furniture by using coasters or mats to prevent direct heat or moisture from accumulating on the surface. Always be sure to wipe up moisture promptly with a soft, clean, and dry cloth.

Protect the surface against scratches from decorative objects using e.g. felt pads.

Cleaning

Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Use a mild soapy solution if necessary but never household detergents. Always dry with a clean cloth. Use a soft cotton or lint-free cloth, do not use a microfibre cloth. Do not put wooden trays in the dishwasher or submerge in water.

Dust your wooden products or furniture regularly with a soft cotton cloth to avoid build up of airbourne particles. We do not recommend using finish polishes as these can result in a build up of residue over time or may contain harmful chemicals.

Beeswax finish

We use an Irish-made natural beeswax finish on our solid wood trays. This is a beautiful finish that uses 100% natural ingredients. It is non-toxic, foodsafe and the orange oil gives an added citrus aroma.

Wax acts as a repellent, but is not a guarantee against harsh stains like coffee or wine and does not protect against strong heat. To prevent harsh stains or heat damage, always use coasters. Always wipe any spills immediately.

The great thing about the wax finish is it can be easily maintained.

How to rejuvenate your wooden tray with Bí Wax:

Wipe tray clean with a damp cloth and wipe dry. If you want to repair any marks or scratches gently sand with a 240 grit or finer sandpaper in the direction of the grain. Wipe with a clean cloth to remove dust before applying the wax.

Using a clean dry cotton or lint-free cloth, apply a small amount of Bí Wax and rub into the surface in a circular motion. Allow to rest for approx. 10 - 20 mins. Using a new clean cotton cloth, quickly rub the surface in the direction of the grain, applying a little pressure, to create a buffed smooth surface.

Throughout the lifetime of the tray, you can repeat application as many times as you like, without the need to remove any previous coats of wax.
